U.S. Stock Futures Remain Steady#
On Monday evening, U.S. stock futures showed little movement after Wall Street closed slightly lower. Investors are exercising caution due to rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran, particularly with a ceasefire nearing its expiration.
S&P 500 Futures rose by 0.1% to 7,155.0 points, while Nasdaq 100 Futures increased by 0.2% to 26,808.75 points. Dow Jones Futures also edged up by 0.1% to 49,708.0 points.
Wall Street's Recent Performance#
In the regular trading session, the three major U.S. stock indexes ended lower, breaking a recent streak of gains. The S&P 500 fell approximately 0.2%, the NASDAQ Composite dropped 0.3%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average also saw a decline.
These losses were attributed to renewed uncertainties in the Middle East, particularly after Iran re-closed the Strait of Hormuz and conflicting reports emerged regarding peace talks in Pakistan. Additionally, the U.S. seized an Iranian cargo vessel, leading to threats of retaliation from Iran.
Rising Oil Prices and Investor Concerns#
Investor anxiety was heightened by a sharp increase in oil prices, driven by concerns over supply disruptions. As tensions escalate, traders are closely monitoring planned discussions in Islamabad, where U.S. officials are set to engage in further talks aimed at reducing tensions. However, uncertainty persists as Iranian officials have not confirmed their participation.
Focus on Federal Reserve and Earnings Reports#
In addition to geopolitical issues, investors are also paying attention to the confirmation hearing for Federal Reserve chair nominee Kevin Warsh, scheduled for this week. Warsh has stressed the importance of central bank independence while suggesting a potentially narrower focus for monetary policy.
Moreover, a busy earnings calendar is on the horizon, with major companies like UnitedHealth, Danaher, GE Aerospace, 3M, Northrop Grumman, Halliburton, and RTX Corp set to report their results before Tuesday’s market opening. The upcoming March retail sales data will also be closely watched for insights into consumer spending amid rising energy costs.
