Volkswagen's New Direction#

Volkswagen, the well-known German automaker, is currently in talks with Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defence Systems. The discussions focus on transforming one of Volkswagen's factories to shift from car manufacturing to producing missile defence systems.

Planned Changes at the Osnabrück Plant#

The specific factory under consideration is the Osnabrück plant. The plan is to adapt this facility to manufacture components for Rafael’s Iron Dome air defence system, which is designed to intercept and destroy short-range threats. This shift aims to keep the plant operational and safeguard the 2,300 jobs that could be at risk due to potential closure.

Support from the German Government#

The proposal has garnered support from the German government, which is backing the initiative as a way to maintain employment and enhance national security capabilities. The two companies also plan to market the newly produced defence systems to various European governments, potentially expanding their reach in the defence sector.

Timeline for Production#

If the deal goes through, production at the revamped facility could begin within 12 to 18 months. This timeline is dependent on workers agreeing to transition from automotive manufacturing to weapons production, which represents a significant shift in the plant's operations.
