Overview of the Reward Announcement#
The United States Department of State has announced a reward of up to $10 million for information on key leaders of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This initiative is part of the Rewards for Justice program, which aims to gather intelligence on individuals involved in terrorism.
The Role of the IRGC#
The IRGC is a significant part of Iran's military and is accused by the US government of planning and executing terrorist activities worldwide. The State Department claims that the IRGC plays a crucial role in Iran's strategy of using terrorism as a tool of statecraft. Since its establishment in 1979, the IRGC has expanded its influence over Iran's foreign policy and economy, as well as its domestic politics.
US Designations and Legal Implications#
In 2019, the US designated the IRGC, including its Qods Force, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. This designation means that all IRGC assets within US jurisdiction are blocked, and US citizens are prohibited from engaging in transactions with the IRGC. Providing support to the IRGC is considered a criminal offense under US law.
Individuals Targeted by the Reward#
The reward is specifically aimed at gathering information on several high-ranking IRGC officials. Notable figures include Mojtaba Khamenei, Ali Asghar Hejazi, and Maj. Gen. Yahya Rahim Safavi, among others. These individuals hold significant positions within Iran's government and military structure, including roles in the Supreme Leader's Office and the Supreme National Security Council.
