Notable Gainers#

Despite the overall market decline, some stocks managed to gain ground. Rentokil Initial PLC saw a significant increase of 5.16%, rising 24.10 points to close at 491.40. Airtel Africa PLC followed with a 3.26% gain, adding 11.00 points to finish at 348.60. SSE PLC also performed well, up 3.17% or 83.00 points, closing at 2,704.00.

Major Losers#

On the flip side, several companies experienced substantial losses. WPP PLC faced the largest drop, losing 7.91% or 20.20 points, ending at 235.20. Persimmon PLC decreased by 6.31%, down 80.00 points to close at 1,188.50, while HSBC Holdings PLC fell by 6.05%, shedding 77.00 points to finish at 1,195.80.

Market Statistics#

Overall, declining stocks outnumbered those that rose, with 1,106 stocks falling compared to 691 that gained, while 502 remained unchanged on the London Stock Exchange. In commodities, Gold Futures for April delivery dropped by 0.94%, settling at $5,130.31 per troy ounce. In contrast, Crude oil prices increased, with April delivery rising by 8.93% to $95.04 a barrel, and May Brent oil up 8.25% to $99.57 a barrel. Currency-wise, GBP/USD decreased by 0.40% to 1.34, while the EUR/GBP remained stable at 0.86. The US Dollar Index Futures rose by 0.40% to 99.62.
