Overview#

On Wednesday, futures linked to Canada’s main stock index, the S&P/TSX, showed little change as traders focused on the ongoing conflict in Iran and prepared for the release of monthly U.S. inflation data.

Iran Conflict Impact#

As of 07:06 ET (11:06 GMT), the S&P/TSX 60 index standard futures contract remained mostly unchanged. Traders are closely watching the escalating joint military actions by the U.S. and Israel against Iran, which could disrupt global oil supplies and potentially impact economic growth worldwide. This situation has led to significant fluctuations in oil prices, creating uncertainty for the TSX, which is heavily influenced by commodity prices.

Recent Market Performance#

On Tuesday, the S&P/TSX composite index rose by 0.3%, closing at 33,270.65. This increase was supported by gains in metal mining stocks, driven by higher gold prices, which helped offset declines in energy stocks due to falling oil prices.

U.S. Stock Futures#

Meanwhile, U.S. stock futures showed slight increases on Wednesday after earlier declines. By 07:20 ET, the Dow futures were up by 41 points (0.1%), S&P 500 futures increased by 7 points (0.1%), and Nasdaq 100 futures rose by 16 points (0.1%). The previous day saw mixed results on Wall Street, with the Dow and S&P 500 experiencing minor declines, while the Nasdaq Composite managed a small gain.

Strategic Oil Reserve Release#

Markets are also reacting to a report from the Wall Street Journal indicating that the International Energy Agency (IEA) may propose a significant release of strategic oil reserves to stabilize oil prices affected by the conflict in Iran. This potential release could exceed the 182 million barrels made available by IEA member nations after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Analysts suggest that while this release might temporarily cap oil prices, a lasting solution would require military de-escalation in the region. U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated a willingness to intensify military actions against Iran, particularly following reports of naval mines placed in the Strait of Hormuz.
