Introduction#
The Trump Administration has introduced a national legislative framework aimed at shaping artificial intelligence (AI) policy. This initiative calls on Congress to enact comprehensive legislation that addresses six critical areas related to AI development and use.
Protecting Children#
One of the key focuses of the framework is the protection of children. It emphasizes the need for parental controls and privacy features on AI platforms that minors can access. The proposal includes requirements for these platforms to implement safeguards against harmful content, such as sexual exploitation and self-harm.
Energy Infrastructure#
In terms of energy infrastructure, the administration suggests that Congress simplify the permitting process. This would allow data centers to generate their own power on-site, reducing reliance on the electrical grid. The framework argues that the costs associated with data center operations should not fall on ratepayers, or those who pay for electricity.
Intellectual Property and Censorship#
The proposal also addresses intellectual property rights, aiming to strike a balance between protecting creators and allowing AI systems to use materials for educational purposes. Furthermore, it seeks to prevent AI from being used to censor or silence political expression, advocating for AI development that prioritizes truth and accuracy without government interference.
Workforce Development and Uniformity#
On the topic of workforce development, the administration plans to expand training programs to prepare American workers for jobs in AI-related fields. Additionally, the framework stresses the importance of uniform regulations across all states, warning that conflicting state laws could hinder innovation and competitiveness in AI development.
The administration intends to collaborate with Congress in the coming months to turn this framework into formal legislation for the President's approval.
