Introduction#
Tessera, a blockchain technology firm, is set to revolutionize private equity by integrating it into the Solana ecosystem. This initiative aims to give investors greater access to high-growth private companies without the lengthy lockup periods typically associated with venture capital.
What is Tokenization?#
Led by Chan Ahn, a former executive at Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase, Tessera focuses on the concept of "tokenization." This process involves converting traditional financial assets into digital tokens that can be traded and utilized within a cryptocurrency framework. By choosing Solana—a fast blockchain capable of processing thousands of transactions per second at minimal costs—Tessera aims to enhance the trading experience for these tokens.
How Tessera Works#
Tessera's platform will acquire shares from private companies and hold them in special financial structures known as special purpose vehicles. These shares will then be tokenized, allowing them to be traded on decentralized exchanges with instant settlement. Unlike traditional private equity shares, these tokens can be bought and sold at any time, providing more flexibility for investors.
Market Potential and Fees#
The timing of Tessera's launch aligns with a growing interest in real-world assets, which have recently surpassed $20 billion in market value. The initial offerings are expected to include stakes in late-stage private companies in the technology and cryptocurrency sectors, such as SpaceX and OpenAI. Tessera will charge a 0.2% transfer fee for token transactions, but there are no management or origination fees. However, it’s important to note that these tokens will provide loan participation rights rather than equity shares, meaning they do not come with voting rights in the underlying companies.
Future Plans#
While Tessera has no immediate plans for a project or governance token, the possibility remains open. Ahn emphasized that the structure of the tokens is designed to navigate international financial regulations effectively.
