Overview of Production Changes#
South32, a diversified mining company, has announced a reduction in its full-year production forecast for manganese in Australia. This adjustment comes after operations were disrupted by heavy rainfall during the wet season and the impact of Tropical Cyclone Narelle.
New Production Expectations#
The company now anticipates that its fiscal 2026 production for Australian manganese will reach 3 million wet metric tons (wmt). This figure represents a decrease of over 6% from their previous forecast, indicating the significant impact of the recent weather events on their operations.
Impact of Cyclone Narelle#
In March, Cyclone Narelle specifically affected operations at South32’s Gemco manganese mine located in the Northern Territory. Cyclones can cause severe disruptions to mining activities, leading to delays and reduced output.
Output Trends#
Despite these challenges, South32 reported an increase in third-quarter output. Australia Manganese produced 589,000 wmt in the March quarter, a notable rise from no production during the same period last year. Additionally, manganese production from South Africa increased to 500,000 wmt, up from 476,000 wmt in the previous year, showcasing a positive trend in that region.
