Overview#

SoftBank Group Corp. is set to construct a significant AI data center on federally owned land in Ohio. The project will utilize approximately $33 billion worth of natural gas-fired electricity, with plans to complete it by the end of the decade.

Project Details#

The AI computing complex will be built at a former uranium enrichment site owned by the U.S. Energy Department. This facility is designed to draw 10 gigawatts of power, which is enough to supply electricity to around 7.5 million homes at any given moment. The total cost for the data center, including necessary chips and equipment, is estimated to be between $30 billion and $40 billion.

Government Involvement#

While the Trump administration has mentioned SoftBank’s $33 billion gas project as part of a larger $550 billion trade agreement between the U.S. and Japan, this announcement marks the first detailed plans for the AI data center.

Infrastructure Development#

SoftBank has already sourced turbines for the gas project, with the first set expected to arrive within a year. These turbines will generate a total of 9.2 gigawatts and will be distributed across the region rather than being concentrated in one location. Additionally, SB Energy, a SoftBank-backed company, is planning to add another 800 megawatts of capacity for the data center.
