Samsung Increases DRAM Supply#
Samsung Electronics has significantly increased its monthly supply of DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) to Tesla, quadrupling the amount to meet the growing demand from the electric vehicle manufacturer. According to a report from South Korean publication Edaily, this increase took place in April, compared to the supply levels seen in the first quarter of the year.
Reasons for Increased Demand#
Tesla has been facing challenges with its memory supply, which is crucial for its in-vehicle infotainment systems and autonomous driving technologies. To address this issue, Samsung has ramped up production at its Hwaseong campus, ensuring that Tesla receives the necessary components to support its operations.
Long-term Agreement and Future Plans#
Last year, Samsung entered into a long-term agreement with Tesla for semiconductor manufacturing, valued at approximately $16.5 billion. This partnership highlights the importance of memory chips in Tesla's technology and production processes. Additionally, Samsung plans to start producing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips for Tesla at its Texas foundry by 2026, further solidifying their collaboration.
Global Memory Chip Market Trends#
The global supply of memory chips has tightened significantly since mid-2025, largely due to increased demand from the AI industry. In response, Samsung has been adjusting its production strategy, focusing more on high-margin AI products, such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM), rather than traditional DRAM. Notably, NVIDIA Corporation is a key customer for Samsung's HBM chips, indicating a shift in market dynamics.
