Overview of Russian Oil Production#
In February, Russian oil production saw a slight decline, dropping by about 56,000 barrels per day compared to January. This brought the total output to 9.184 million barrels per day (bpd), according to data from OPEC reviewed by Reuters.
Impact of Sanctions#
Despite facing Western sanctions due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Russia has managed to keep its oil production relatively stable. However, the sanctions have influenced its export dynamics, particularly with India, which is its second-largest buyer after China.
Changes in Exports to India#
Russian crude oil exports to India decreased recently, largely due to pressure from the United States. However, there has been a recovery in these sales since February. This turnaround followed a 30-day waiver granted by Washington, allowing Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil loaded on vessels as of March 5. This waiver aims to alleviate the global oil supply issues exacerbated by the Iran conflict.
Russia's Global Standing#
Currently, Russia ranks as the world's third-largest oil producer, following the United States and Saudi Arabia. This position highlights the significant role Russia plays in the global oil market, even amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
