Overview of Stock Movements#

In pre-open trading on Wednesday, several optical stocks experienced notable increases. Applied Optoelectronics (NASDAQ:AAOI) shares surged by 9%, while Lumentum (NASDAQ:LITE) rose by 7%. Coherent (NASDAQ:COHR) and Viavi Solutions (NASDAQ:VIAV) also saw gains of 2.3% and 1%, respectively. This rally comes as companies presented at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) and highlighted strong demand for artificial intelligence (AI).

Insights from the Optical Fiber Communication Conference#

The positive momentum in optical stocks followed encouraging discussions at the OFC. Companies emphasized growth opportunities in optical interconnect solutions, which are essential for high-speed data transfer. Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, pointed out the increasing need for these optical solutions, alongside a continued demand for traditional copper connections.

Analyst Perspectives#

Rosenblatt analyst Mike Genovese noted that the presentations at the conference were optimistic, particularly highlighting Lumentum's bullish outlook. He mentioned that the scale-up of co-packaged optics (CPO) is expected to begin in 2028, targeting significant data transfer rates. This development represents a substantial opportunity for optical companies to enhance their offerings.

Future Capacity and Market Potential#

Genovese also highlighted that indium phosphide lasers, crucial for transceivers, are sold out until 2028 due to high demand. Companies like Lumentum and Coherent are expanding their production capabilities to meet this demand, suggesting a prolonged cycle of growth in AI infrastructure. Coherent projected that advancements in optical circuit switching and next-generation optics could add over $20 billion to its serviceable market, increasing its total addressable market to $70 billion by 2030.

Applied Optoelectronics announced plans to ramp up production of new laser modules, aiming to produce 5,000 units per month by the end of 2026, with a goal of reaching 400,000 units per month by late 2027.
