U.S. Stock Futures Decline#

U.S. stock market futures are showing a downward trend, indicating a potentially negative close to the trading week. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly the war involving Iran, is contributing to this decline. As of 04:10 ET (08:10 GMT), the Dow futures fell by 241 points (0.5%), S&P 500 futures decreased by 35 points (0.5%), and Nasdaq 100 futures dropped by 157 points (0.6%). The previous trading session saw Wall Street averages decline, largely due to concerns that the fighting will not end soon. A statement from Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, about keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed has further unsettled investors, as this waterway is crucial for global oil supply.

Oil Prices Surge#

Brent crude oil prices have surged above $100 a barrel, driven by fears of a prolonged conflict in the Middle East. This week, Brent prices have experienced significant volatility, reaching nearly $120 a barrel at one point before briefly dipping below $90. Analysts are debating whether this price increase will be sustained. According to Kieran Tompkins, a Senior Economist at Capital Economics, investors currently see a one-in-five chance that Brent crude prices will remain at or above $100 per barrel in the next three months. As of 04:33 ET on Friday, Brent crude futures were up 0.6% at $101.04 a barrel, marking a weekly gain of over 9%. Just prior to the conflict, prices were around $70 a barrel.

Impact on Gold Prices#

The rise in oil prices has also affected gold, which is often seen as a safe-haven asset during times of uncertainty. Due to inflation concerns stemming from the oil price shock, gold is on track for a weekly decline. Investors are closely watching upcoming price growth data from the U.S. to gauge the broader economic impact.
