Nvidia's Major Deal with AWS#

Nvidia Corporation has announced a significant partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), committing to deliver 1 million graphics processing units (GPUs) between 2026 and 2027. This marks the first official timeline for this collaboration, which will include various chips and networking equipment aimed at enhancing AWS's cloud computing capabilities.

Details of the Agreement#

According to Ian Buck, Nvidia’s vice president, the GPU deliveries will commence this year. However, the deal extends beyond just GPUs. AWS will also acquire Nvidia’s Spectrum networking chips and Groq chips, which Nvidia obtained through a $17 billion licensing deal with AI chip startup Groq in late 2025. These chips will be used to optimize AI inference workloads, which is the process where AI systems generate responses and perform tasks.

Buck emphasized the complexity of inference, stating, "Inference is hard. It’s wickedly hard." He noted that achieving the best performance in this area requires a combination of multiple chips, not just one.

Networking Equipment Shift#

The agreement also includes the deployment of Nvidia’s Connect X and Spectrum X networking equipment in AWS data centers. This is a notable change, as AWS has traditionally relied on its own custom-built networking solutions. Buck mentioned that while AWS will continue to use its proprietary equipment, this collaboration will enhance their capabilities for important AI workloads.

Future Opportunities#

Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, has projected a $1 trillion sales opportunity for Nvidia's Rubin and Blackwell chip families through 2027. This estimate does not include CPUs or Groq-based products, suggesting that the potential market could be even larger. Huang also indicated that the integration of Groq chips could unlock substantial revenue opportunities.

What to Watch#

Investors and industry watchers should keep an eye on several key factors: - The pace of GPU deliveries and whether Nvidia meets its commitment. - The timeline for deploying Groq chips at AWS beyond initial pilot programs. - The extent of AWS's adoption of Nvidia’s networking equipment. - The financial impact of this partnership, expected to be revealed in early 2027. - Competitive responses from AMD and other rivals as Nvidia expands its presence in AWS infrastructure.
