Production Cuts at Kyushu Plant#
Nissan Motor is set to reduce production by approximately 1,200 vehicles this month at its Kyushu plant in Japan. This decision comes in response to export disruptions to the Middle East, which have been caused by escalating tensions in the region.
Adjustments to Production#
The company plans to scale back the production of certain models that are not intended for the Middle East. This adjustment aims to free up storage space, as vehicles meant for this region are currently being held domestically due to logistical challenges.
Continued Production of Key Models#
Despite these cuts, production of the Patrol, a popular large SUV that is crucial for the Middle Eastern market, will continue at the nearby Nissan Shatai Kyushu plant. This is due to strong demand and high profitability for this model.
Broader Industry Impact#
The disruptions in exports are linked to rising tensions surrounding the Iran conflict and associated shipping risks in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route. In a related note, Japan’s Toyota Motor has also announced a significant production cut of about 40,000 vehicles intended for the Middle East through April.
