Introduction#

MSC, a major player in the shipping industry, has announced that it will implement emergency fuel surcharges on various global shipping routes beginning March 16, 2026. This move comes as a response to rising fuel costs affecting shipping operations.

Surcharges for Northern Europe#

The new surcharges will apply to cargo transported from Northern Europe, which includes the UK and the Scanbaltic region. For shipments heading to the Red Sea, the fees will be $85 for each dry container and $125 for each refrigerated (reefer) container. If the destination is East Africa, the charges increase to $155 for dry containers and $230 for reefer containers.

Higher Rates from Scanbaltic#

Cargo originating from the Scanbaltic region will face even steeper surcharges. For shipments to the Red Sea, the costs will be $120 per dry container and $180 per reefer container. For routes leading to East Africa, the fees will rise to $190 for dry containers and $290 for reefer containers.

Additional Routes Affected#

MSC has also announced that emergency fuel surcharges will apply to other trade routes. This includes shipments from Southern Africa to various destinations such as the Northwest Continent, UK, Mediterranean, Black Sea, Far East, Bangladesh, South America, and the Caribbean. Additionally, cargo moving from Asia to the United States and Canada will incur surcharges, although specific rates for this route have not been disclosed.

For shipments from Northern Europe and the Mediterranean to Australia and New Zealand, the surcharges will be $200 for dry containers and $300 for reefer containers. All these surcharges will remain in effect until further notice, according to MSC.
