Meta Delays AI Model Release#
Meta Platforms Inc has decided to delay the release of its new artificial intelligence model, known as Avocado, due to concerns about its performance. According to a report from the New York Times, Avocado did not meet the performance standards set by leading AI models from other major tech companies.
Performance Comparison#
While Avocado showed improvements over Meta's previous AI models, it still fell short when compared to Google’s Gemini 3.0, which was launched in November. This comparison highlights the competitive landscape in the AI sector, where performance is crucial for success.
New Release Timeline#
As a result of these performance concerns, Meta has postponed the release of Avocado to at least May 2026. In the meantime, the company is exploring the option of temporarily licensing Google’s Gemini to enhance its AI products in the short term.
Investment in AI Development#
Meta has invested heavily in AI development, spending hundreds of billions in recent years. This includes attracting top talent in the field and expanding its computing resources to support its AI initiatives. Earlier this year, Meta indicated plans to allocate up to $135 billion for AI development in 2023 alone.
