Lufthansa's Legal Setback#
Germany's Lufthansa has faced a significant legal defeat as its appeal against a court ruling regarding European Union (EU) pandemic aid was dismissed. This ruling confirms a win for rival airline Ryanair, which challenged the aid received by Lufthansa during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Court Ruling Details#
The European Union’s Court of Justice upheld a previous decision made by the General Court that annulled the European Commission's approval of state aid for Lufthansa. This ruling stems from a legal challenge initiated by Ryanair, which argued that the aid was unfair competition.
Lufthansa's Response#
In response to the court's decision, Lufthansa acknowledged the ruling and noted that the European Commission's ongoing investigation, which began in 2024, can now consider this recent judgment. The airline expressed its intention to engage constructively with the relevant authorities as the situation develops.
Operational Challenges#
Lufthansa is currently facing additional challenges, including a dispute with its pilots' union over pension issues and disruptions caused by strike actions. Recently, the airline announced it would reduce its schedule by cutting 20,000 short-haul flights through October. Furthermore, it has decided to permanently withdraw 27 CityLine aircraft from service, citing rising jet fuel prices and costs associated with the strikes.
