Overview of the Situation#

An Iranian oil tanker, known as the Huge, may have successfully navigated through a US blockade aimed at restricting oil shipments from Iran. This information comes from TankerTrackers.com, a company that uses satellite imagery to track vessel movements.

Tanker Movement Details#

The Huge, which sails under the Iranian flag, was reported to be off the coast of Bali. Notably, this vessel had been absent from digital ship-tracking systems for several months. According to Samir Madani, co-founder of TankerTrackers.com, satellite images confirmed the ship's location near Bali, and it was last seen at an Iranian port just hours before the US blockade was implemented on April 13.

US Blockade and Its Impact#

The US has been actively preventing ships carrying Iranian oil from leaving the Gulf of Oman since April 13. As part of this operation, US Central Command reported that they have redirected 50 vessels during this period. In recent days, more Iranian ships have been observed gathering near Chabahar, a port city close to the Pakistan border, which is just outside the blockade zone.

Analysis of the Situation#

Madani noted that his analysis suggests the Huge is the only vessel he has seen that likely evaded the blockade. He confirmed seeing the ship near Chabahar on the morning of April 13, just before the blockade began that afternoon. In response to rising tensions, the US has initiated an operation to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for oil transport.
