Introduction#

Iran is contemplating a proposal to impose transit fees on ships navigating the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global oil and gas transportation.

Proposed Legislation#

A lawmaker announced that the Iranian parliament is discussing legislation that would require countries using the strait for shipping, energy transit, and food supplies to pay tolls and taxes to Iran. This move could generate revenue for Tehran while controlling access to a vital maritime route.

Impact of Regional Conflicts#

The proposal comes amid heightened tensions due to the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. Tehran has previously disrupted maritime traffic in the strait, targeting vessels it claims are associated with its adversaries. This has raised concerns about the security of shipping in this critical area.

Future Maritime Regulations#

Mohammad Mokhber, an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, indicated that a new regulatory framework for the Strait of Hormuz would be established following the resolution of the current conflict. He suggested that Iran could use its strategic position to impose restrictions on countries that have sanctioned it, potentially affecting international shipping routes. Mokhber stated, "By using the strategic position of the Strait of Hormuz, we can sanction (the West) and prevent their ships from passing through this waterway."
