Geely's Canadian Market Entry#
Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd., a major Chinese car manufacturer, is preparing to enter the Canadian market. This follows an agreement made earlier this year that allows electric vehicles (EVs) from China to enter Canada without facing hefty tariffs.
Tariff Exemption Details#
In January, Canada announced a significant change: it will exempt up to 49,000 Chinese-built electric vehicles from a 100% tariff that was set to take effect in 2024. This move aims to encourage investment from Chinese automakers and support Canada's manufacturing sector.
Global Expansion Plans#
According to Andy An, the CEO of Geely's parent company, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., the company is not only looking at Canada but also exploring opportunities in Brazil, South America, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia. Currently, Geely is focusing on exporting vehicles but is considering local production options in these markets.
Other Chinese Automakers in Canada#
Geely is not alone in its interest in the Canadian market. Other Chinese car manufacturers, such as BYD Co. and Chery Automobile Co. Ltd., are also exploring opportunities in Canada. BYD is considering building a manufacturing plant, while Chery has begun recruiting staff to establish its operations in the country. This trend highlights a growing interest from Chinese companies in the North American automotive market.
