Major Investment in Nuclear Energy#

A partnership between GE Vernova LLC and Hitachi Ltd is set to invest $40 billion to construct small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) in Tennessee and Alabama, according to a recent announcement from the White House. This investment is part of a larger $73 billion energy agreement between the United States and Japan.

Broader Energy Agreement#

In addition to the nuclear project, Japan will also invest in gas power plants located in Pennsylvania and Texas. This collaboration was highlighted in a fact sheet released by the White House shortly after President Donald Trump met with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Washington.

Strengthening Economic Ties#

The White House fact sheet emphasized the importance of enhancing economic cooperation between Japan and the U.S. This includes developing supply chains for critical minerals, which are essential for various technologies, as well as increased collaboration in technology and defense sectors.

Advantages of Small Modular Reactors#

The push for new energy infrastructure, particularly through unconventional sources like SMRs, is driven by the rising electricity demand, notably from the artificial intelligence industry. SMRs are designed to have a lower capacity compared to traditional nuclear reactors but can be built and deployed more quickly, making them an attractive option for meeting future energy needs. Earlier this week, GE Vernova and Hitachi had also announced plans to develop SMRs in Southeast Asia.
