Fundrise Innovation Fund's Remarkable Surge#

Shares in the Fundrise Innovation Fund have experienced a significant increase, climbing as much as 39% to $265 each on Tuesday. This marks the fourth consecutive day of gains for this newly-listed closed-end fund, which trades under the symbol VCX. Due to the high volatility in trading, the shares were halted multiple times.

Understanding Net Asset Value (NAV)#

Since its market debut last week, the Fundrise Innovation Fund has risen more than 1,300% above its net asset value (NAV). NAV is essentially the value of the fund's assets minus its liabilities, and in this case, the recent NAV per share was reported at $18.97. Investors are currently bidding for the limited available shares at more than 13 times this NAV.

Portfolio Highlights#

The fund's portfolio includes stakes in companies that are preparing for initial public offerings (IPOs), such as SpaceX and Anthropic PBC. Additionally, it holds shares in notable firms like OpenAI Inc., Anduril Industries Inc., Databricks Inc., and Ramp Inc.

Lockup Agreement Details#

Fundrise Innovation proposed becoming a publicly listed closed-end fund nearly five years after its inception, aiming to create potential value and enhance liquidity for its investors. However, the majority of the fund’s shares are still under a lockup agreement. For approximately 100,000 investors who purchased shares before the market debut, VCX shares acquired before February 20 cannot be sold for six months following the listing.
