Strong Growth in Car Sales#

European car sales experienced a notable increase in March, with total new car registrations rising by 11.1% compared to the same month last year. This surge brought the total number of new vehicles registered to 1.58 million, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).

Electric and Hybrid Vehicles Lead the Charge#

The primary contributors to this growth were battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). BEV registrations soared by 41.7%, while HEVs saw a rise of 15.3%. In contrast, traditional petrol vehicle registrations declined by 10.2%. In the first quarter of the year, HEVs made up the largest share of new vehicle registrations at 38.6%, followed by petrol vehicles at 22.6%, and BEVs at 19.4%.

Tesla and BYD Show Strong Performance#

Tesla reported a remarkable rebound in sales, with registrations jumping 84.3% to 52,600 vehicles in March. Similarly, Chinese automaker BYD experienced impressive growth, with registrations increasing by 147.6% to 37,580 vehicles. This strong performance reflects a growing consumer preference for electric and hybrid options over traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

Regulatory Support for Electric Vehicles#

The data indicates that European consumers are increasingly favoring EVs and hybrids, aligning with regulatory efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. BYD's affordable hybrid models have gained popularity, especially as the company expands its presence in European markets following the European Union's decision to lower import tariffs on certain Chinese brands.
