EU's Concerns Over Jet Fuel Supply#
European Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas recently highlighted the potential risks to jet fuel supplies stemming from the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. While he stated that there are currently no shortages, he emphasized that continued restrictions could lead to "catastrophic" consequences for Europe and beyond.
Measures to Address Potential Shortages#
In response to the situation, the European Commission plans to provide guidance on various issues, including airport slot management, passenger rights, and public service obligations. This is aimed at preparing for any possible jet fuel shortages that may arise due to the conflict in Iran.
Focus on Sustainable Fuels#
Tzitzikostas pointed out the need for Europe to increase its production of sustainable aviation fuel and synthetic fuels. This strategy aims to lessen the continent's reliance on jet fuel imports from the Middle East, ensuring a more stable supply in the future.
Current Status and Future Plans#
The Commissioner reassured that Europe has emergency jet fuel reserves that can be released if necessary, but this will be done transparently to prevent market distortions. Additionally, the Commission is exploring the possibility of importing alternative jet fuel, such as U.S. grade Jet A. A broader package of energy and transport measures is expected to be presented soon. Tzitzikostas also noted that, as of now, there are no indications of widespread flight cancellations in the near future.
