EU Calls for Restoration of Trade Deal Terms#
The European Union (EU) has urged the United States to promptly restore the tariff levels agreed upon in last year’s trade deal. This request comes from the European Commission, which emphasizes the importance of having the main terms in place before the deal's one-year anniversary at the end of July.
Key Discussions on Tariffs#
On Tuesday, Maros Sefcovic, a top EU official, met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Paris. A significant concern for the EU is U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to increase tariffs on EU cars and trucks to 25%. During their 90-minute discussion, the two officials addressed the most pressing aspects of the trade agreement, including compliance issues raised by Trump regarding the EU’s adherence to the deal.
Timeline for Tariff Changes#
The EU Commission noted that Sefcovic provided Greer with an update on the expected timeline for the EU to remove duties on imported U.S. industrial goods, a commitment made last year. However, this removal is unlikely to occur before June. Sefcovic also called for a quick return to the previously agreed tariff rate of 15%, which includes specific exemptions for the EU.
Changes in U.S. Tariff Policy#
Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated previous global tariffs, leading to a new blanket 10% surcharge on top of existing duties. In some instances, EU products are facing tariffs exceeding 15%. The EU Commission concluded that Sefcovic and Greer agreed to enhance their engagement moving forward.
