Eni's New Gas Discoveries#

Eni, an Italian energy company, recently revealed two substantial gas discoveries in Libya, totaling over 1 trillion cubic feet. This announcement comes as part of an ongoing exploration campaign that began a few months ago.

Details of the Discoveries#

The new gas reserves were located in the Metlaoui formation, a key productive area in the Mediterranean Sea. The newly drilled wells, named Bahr Essalam South 2 and Bahr Essalam South 3, are situated 85 kilometers offshore and 16 kilometers south of the existing Bahr Essalam field. Testing has confirmed that these wells have a high-quality reservoir, indicating strong potential for gas production.

Impact on Supply and Market#

Libya's National Oil Corporation estimates that these discoveries will add approximately 130 million cubic feet of gas per day to the market. This increase is expected to help meet both local and international demand, addressing current supply shortages. The gas will be used domestically in Libya and exported to Italy, enhancing energy security for both nations.

Eni's Ongoing Presence in Libya#

The proximity of the new discoveries to the Bahr Essalam field, which has been operational since 2005, allows for quick integration into existing offshore facilities. Eni has been active in Libya since 1959, and these latest finds represent a significant expansion of its gas production capabilities in the Mediterranean region, where it operates in several countries.
