Tensions Between Cuba and the US#

Cuba’s Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, recently stated that the United States is attempting to create a reason to remove the Cuban government. This statement follows a failed attempt by US senators to limit former President Donald Trump’s ability to use military force against Cuba.

Claims of Threats#

Rodríguez criticized the idea that Cuba, a communist nation located just south of Florida, poses a threat to the United States, which has the world’s most powerful military. He described these claims as absurd, especially in light of the ongoing tensions.

US Officials' Statements#

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has argued that Cuba is a national security risk due to its relationships with adversaries like China and Russia. He emphasized that the Trump administration would not allow any foreign military operations to operate freely near US borders, which are only 90 miles away from Cuba.

Economic Measures Against Cuba#

In response to these tensions, the Trump administration has intensified economic sanctions against Cuba, including a comprehensive energy blockade that began in January. This blockade has been linked to the US's actions against Venezuela, including the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and directives to halt fuel shipments to Cuba. Since the blockade was implemented, only one Russian tanker has delivered crude oil to the island, highlighting the economic challenges Cuba faces.
