Overview of the Ban#
Brazil has recently blocked 28 prediction market platforms, as announced by Finance Minister Dario Durigan. This action is part of a broader effort to enforce compliance with the country’s betting regulations approved by Congress.
New Regulations on Betting#
The National Monetary Council clarified which assets can be used in derivatives trading, specifically banning those associated with sports events, online gaming, and various social outcomes. Minister Durigan emphasized that these prediction markets are neither legal nor regulated in Brazil.
Protecting Consumers#
Presidential Chief of Staff Belchior stated that the government's aim is to protect the public from potential financial losses. He noted that the intention behind this measure is to prevent the emergence of an uncontrolled betting market based on predictions.
Compliance for Future Operations#
Belchior further mentioned that any company wishing to operate in Brazil must adhere to established rules designed to safeguard the population. Durigan also indicated that the telecommunications regulator, Anatel, may have already taken steps to block these prediction platforms from operating.
