Brazil Blocks Prediction Markets#

Brazil has recently taken action against 28 prediction market platforms, including well-known names like Polymarket and Kalshi. This decision was announced by Finance Minister Dario Durigan during a press conference in Brasilia.

Regulatory Compliance Issues#

According to Minister Durigan, these platforms do not comply with the betting regulations that were approved by the Brazilian Congress. He emphasized that prediction markets, which allow users to bet on the outcome of future events, are currently neither legal nor regulated in Brazil.

Protecting Citizens' Finances#

The government’s move to block these platforms is part of a broader effort to protect citizens' savings. Durigan mentioned that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is particularly concerned about individuals who are in debt and may be drawn into gambling activities. The aim is to safeguard people’s financial well-being as the government works to reduce national debt levels.

Future Regulatory Measures#

In addition to the current bans, the government is considering further measures to regulate the betting market in Brazil. Chief of Staff Miriam Belchior stated that these actions are intended to protect household incomes, prevent financial losses, and reduce families' exposure to risky practices. The Finance Ministry has also released a complete list of the banned platforms, signaling a commitment to stricter oversight in the future.
