AWS Expansion Plans#
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is set to significantly increase its data center capacity in India, targeting between 2 to 3 gigawatts. This expansion is expected to be supported by potential tax incentives, according to a report from the Economic Times.
Collaborations with Colocation Firms#
To facilitate this growth, AWS has signed letters of intent with several colocation firms, which are companies that provide space and infrastructure for servers. These firms include Sify Technologies, Yotta Data Services, NTT Data, CtrlS, and Capitaland. This collaboration is part of AWS’s strategy to enhance its presence in major cities like Mumbai and Hyderabad.
Current Operations and Future Investments#
Currently, AWS operates two infrastructure regions in India, located in Mumbai and Hyderabad. The company has been expanding its operations in response to the increasing demand for cloud services and artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, AWS announced a substantial investment of $8.3 billion in its Mumbai cloud region, which is projected to contribute $15.3 billion to India’s GDP by 2030.
Growth of India’s Cloud Market#
India's public cloud market is experiencing rapid growth. Valued at $10.9 billion in 2024, it is expected to reach $30.4 billion by 2029, according to industry estimates. This growth reflects the rising reliance on cloud technology across various sectors in the country.
