Market Overview#

Australian equities closed lower on Tuesday, with the S&P/ASX 200 index declining by 0.04%. This drop was influenced by losses in several key sectors, particularly Energy, Gold, and Healthcare.

Top Performers#

Despite the overall decline, some stocks managed to gain. DroneShield Ltd (ASX:DRO) led the way, rising by 6.09%, or 0.22 points, to close at 3.83. Codan Ltd (ASX:CDA) followed with a 4.27% increase, adding 1.49 points to finish at 36.37. Yancoal Australia Ltd (ASX:YAL) also saw a positive day, up 4.09%, or 0.27 points, ending at 6.87.

Notable Declines#

On the other hand, several stocks faced significant losses. Hub24 Ltd (ASX:HUB) was the biggest loser, dropping 8.56%, or 8.17 points, to trade at 87.28. Contact Energy Ltd (ASX:CEN) fell by 3.36%, or 0.27 points, closing at 7.77, while MFF Capital Investments Ltd (ASX:MFF) decreased by 3.35%, or 0.16 points, to finish at 4.62.

Market Statistics#

In total, advancing stocks outnumbered those that declined, with 584 stocks rising compared to 509 that fell, while 431 remained unchanged on the Sydney Stock Exchange. The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which indicates market volatility, decreased by 0.54% to 13.17.

Commodities and Currency#

In commodities, Gold Futures for June delivery dropped by 0.64%, or 31.04, to $4,797.76 per troy ounce. Crude oil prices also fell, with June contracts down 1.22%, or 1.07, to $86.35 a barrel, and Brent oil down 0.97%, or 0.93, to $94.55 a barrel. In currency markets, the AUD/USD remained stable at 0.72, while the AUD/JPY fell slightly by 0.14% to 113.81. The US Dollar Index Futures saw a minor increase of 0.04% to 97.95.
