Market Overview#

On Thursday, Australian equities closed lower, with the S&P/ASX 200 index dropping by 0.10%. This decline was primarily influenced by losses in the Information Technology, Gold, and Telecommunications sectors.

Top Performers#

Despite the overall market downturn, some stocks managed to gain. DroneShield Ltd (ASX:DRO) saw a notable increase of 5.63%, rising 0.24 points to close at 4.50. Orica Ltd (ASX:ORI) also performed well, adding 5.33% or 1.04 points to finish at 20.57. Mercury NZ Ltd (ASX:MCY) rose by 5.05%, up 0.26 points to close at 5.41.

Notable Declines#

On the other hand, several companies faced significant losses. Nickel Mines Ltd (ASX:NIC) dropped 7.94%, losing 0.08 points to trade at 0.87. Megaport Ltd (ASX:MP1) declined by 7.56%, down 0.60 points to end at 7.34. Treasury Wine Estates Ltd (ASX:TWE) also fell, shedding 5.08% or 0.18 points to close at 3.36.

Commodities and Currency#

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery fell by 1.44%, down 66.10 to $4,519.40 per troy ounce. Conversely, Crude oil prices increased, with May delivery rising by 2.08% to $92.20 a barrel, and the June Brent oil contract up 1.60% to $98.82 a barrel. In currency markets, the AUD/USD remained stable at 0.69, while the AUD/JPY slightly decreased by 0.03% to 110.81. The US Dollar Index Futures saw a minor increase of 0.04%, reaching 99.44.
