Major Order Announcement#

Malaysia’s AirAsia has made headlines by ordering 150 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. This order is notable as it is the largest single firm order for the A220 program, bringing the total firm orders for this aircraft model to over 1,000 units. The announcement took place at Airbus's facility in Mirabel, with key figures including AirAsia's CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and Airbus's CEO of Commercial Aircraft Lars Wagner present.

New Cabin Configuration#

With this deal, AirAsia becomes a new customer for the A220 and will introduce a new 160-seat cabin configuration. This increase in capacity, which adds 10 more seats, is made possible by including an additional exit over the wings on each side of the aircraft. This design change allows the airline to accommodate more passengers while maintaining safety standards.

Expanding Routes#

AirAsia plans to utilize the A220 on various routes across the ASEAN region and into Central Asia. This strategic move will enable the airline to assign larger aircraft to longer routes, enhancing its service offerings. Fernandes emphasized that this order reflects the airline's ambition and commitment to building a low-cost network carrier that can reach new markets.

Environmental Considerations#

The A220 is designed to carry between 100 and 160 passengers and has a range of up to 3,600 nautical miles. Notably, the aircraft can operate using up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus aiming for 100% SAF capability across its fleet by 2030. This focus on sustainability aligns with the growing emphasis on reducing the environmental impact of air travel.
