Overview of Air Astana's Q1 Performance#
Air Astana JSC, the national airline of Kazakhstan, reported a total revenue of $331.0 million for the first quarter ending March 31. This marks a 13.2% increase from $292.4 million during the same period last year, highlighting the airline's ability to grow its income despite ongoing challenges.
Earnings and Costs#
The airline's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, and rent (EBITDAR) saw a decline of 19.6%, dropping to $48.2 million from $59.9 million in the first quarter of 2025. This decline resulted in a lower EBITDAR margin, which fell to 14.6% from 20.5%. Additionally, Air Astana reported a net loss of $21.1 million, a significant increase from a loss of $7.3 million in the same quarter last year.
Passenger and Capacity Metrics#
Air Astana carried 1.95 million passengers in the quarter, a slight decrease from 2.01 million in the first quarter of 2025. However, the load factor, which measures how efficiently the airline fills seats, improved to 83.3% from 81.5%. Revenue per available seat kilometer (RASK) increased by 12.4% to 7.01 cents, while the cost per available seat kilometer (CASK) rose by 19.8% to 7.30 cents, indicating that while revenue grew, costs increased at a faster rate.
Strategic Adjustments and New Routes#
In response to the suspension of flights to certain Gulf destinations due to regional conflicts, Air Astana has redirected its capacity towards Southeast Asia and increased flight frequencies on East-West transit routes. The airline also launched new routes, including a service from Almaty to Shanghai, operating three times a week with Airbus A321LR aircraft. Additionally, new services to Larnaca, Cyprus, and Dalaman, Turkey, were introduced.
Financial Position#
As of March 31, Air Astana's cash and cash equivalents stood at $442.0 million, a decrease from $513.7 million a year earlier. The net debt to EBITDAR ratio increased to 1.9x from 1.4x in the first quarter of 2025, indicating a rise in the company's leverage. The airline's fleet grew to 62 aircraft, up from 60 a year prior.
